There is some self assembly which is basically attaching the legs( 2 height settings), trays and plastic side bars which is done in 5 mins. The boards are thin but i don't expect them to break unless treated badly.The set comes with oversized chalk a sponge,rubberized letters which stick to the board by suckers and 2 beakers. Arived earlier than expected (good!) and was a doddle to put together, just a cas of attaching legs and trays with some bolts. The kids love it, and are having fun with it as we speak. The opnly down side is I can see it getting broken fairly soon. The boards are quite thin and would only take a toddler chucking a few things at it before it marked or broke the boards. If the boards were made thicker, and maybe the legs thicker and more sturdy (the legs are good and the spacers hold them well, but could be better) this would be an excellent 5 stars all round.
